What I love about the Brainfeeder label is that they allow their artists to express themselves creatively, and by that I mean let them do whatever the f*ck they want. This philosophy holds true on Mono/Poly’s latest EP, Manifestations. It’s dark yet light, grimy yet delicate, and it’s got loads of personality. Straight from the beginning you know you’re in for a treat when the the glowing melodies of the title track hit your ears. Then it takes a turn to one of the highlights of the EP, Forest Dark. I think this is the song that capture’s the EP’s essence perfectly. It’s got elements of glitch hop and J. Dilla-esque beats, but switches things up halfway through the track to a lighter, more organic atmosphere. It’s not often you hear this much versatility in six minutes.
The crowning gem of the whole Mono/Poly EP is one of my favorite glitch hop tracks of all time, Needs Deodorant. This track has been around for a while, but it is being officially released on Manifestations. Either way, it still shines as one of the most swag-tastic tracks this side of Marvin Gaye. It’s got the soul of old school ’70s funk but the heart of modern-day West Coast hip hop. I dare you to listen to it and not start swaying side to side. The rest of the EP is great as well; if you’re a fan of hip hop, glitch hop, dubstep, or anything in between, then you’ll want to pick up this release. Just don’t slip on the swag juice on your way out the door.
