At the core, the name says it all. He is Worthy. As Carl Cox said, “The Worthy sound has always been powerful, rocking, funky, bass-driven music at its best, and for me this is the new wave in house music.”
Growing up in Washington DC, Worthy was inspired by the early American rave scene. Upon moving to New York in the late ’90s, he was exposed to artists like LTJ Bukem and Stacey Pullen whose music inspired him to play records across many genres, from techno and breaks to hip hop and drum & bass. In 2001 he moved to San Francisco, where he teamed up with Claude von Stroke and Justin and Christian Martin, becoming one of the founders of dirtybird.
Worthy has also established his own label, Anabatic Records, which has allowed him to be more experimental with his production. In 2014 Worthy released his debut full-length album, Disbehave, on Anabatic, a genre-defying rebellion against house music’s status quo.
Most recently, Worthy has released part one of a remix album for Disbehave with artists including Stanton Warriors, Walker & Royce, Matt Tolfrey, and Bachelors of Science (get it here). Part 2 will follow on March 17 and will feature Yolanda Be Cool, Thugfucker, and Nick Monaco, among others.
We at LessThan3 were lucky enough to get Worthy to share with us some of his favorite tracks of the moment for Dive Into The Deep. Have a listen above, and read about the tracks in his own words below.
Nick Olivetti – Gangstar (Original Mix) [Deeperfect]
I just moved to Berlin and this track sums that move up pretty good. When I first started DJing I started with techno, so playing this feels like I am 16 again. Not a very obvious club banger or anything, but that’s exactly what it doesn’t want to be. With these types of tracks it’s all about creating that groove that people get lost in. If you play this at the right time you lose sense of time–at least I do.
Worthy feat. Kevin Knapp – On The Floor (Stanton Warriors Remix) [Anabatic]
The Stantons came in and murdered it on this remix. They put their crazy bouncy breakbeat on this, but it has a nice house feel to it too. I have loved playing this one out since the guys sent it over; it gets such a great crowd response. I am honored to have them remix one of my tunes.
Rey & Kjavik – Gotham Sandman (Click Click Remix) [Rey & Kjavik Rec]
I stumbled upon this record while digging and it has become a staple in my sets for the last couple of months. It has the perfect mix of hip hop with a groove that sets up the night for me. It’s a bit of a longer track, but musically it keeps taking you to a new place, even till the end.
ADMN feat. JH Allday – Dance Strutt (Original Mix) [Anabatic]
I think this is one of ADMN’s best songs to date, and one of my favorites from the label last year. It is so dirty and wrong and just kills it on the dancefloor every time it gets dropped. I can’t wait to see what he has up his sleeve next.
Kevin Knapp & Sacha Robotti – Thump Bumper (Original Mix) [dirtybird]
Such a massive tune these two crazy guys came up with. The bass on this almost knocks you off your feet when you’re in the club. It’s so simple and can really be played at almost anytime. It’s one of my favorites off the dirtybird 10 compilation.
MIX OF THE WEEK: Solid Steel Radio Show 8/31/2012 Part 1 + 2 – DJ Cheeba + DJ Moneyshot + DJ Food
I love this mix–they go through the Beastie Boys album, Paul’s Boutique, and mix all the records that they took samples from together. Then they bring in all of the other samples from them talking from radio and TV. It is such a cool listen, especially if you’re into the Beastie Boys at all.
