“You know how many times someone told me I was good in my life? Two! Twice! Two f***in’ times! This raise today, and dancing at the disco!”
This quote was spoken by John Travolta’s character Tony Manero, who was famous for his disco dance moves in the 1977 film Saturday Night Fever. Trying to reach his level? Brush up on your own moves with this week’s Disco Diaries playlist, featuring the best in deep and nu disco, indie dance, soul, funk, and electro pop.
Bell Biv DeVoe – Poison (Roman Kouder Remix)
In 1990, the hip hop trio Bell Biv DeVoe’s released Poison, which reached number one on Billboard’s R&B charts and paved the way for R&B acts through the ’90s and beyond. Now, Parisian producer Roman Kouder has resurrected the hit single with a serious groovy twist, inducing an pleasant blend of ’90s and ’70s nostalgia. Snatch the free download here.
Blood Cultures – Indian Summer
Indian Summer is the debut single from New Jersey act Blood Cultures, whose biographical information (and face) remains a mystery to everyone who has already fallen in love with this track. However, with such melodic chord progressions and dreamy vocals, the music speaks for itself and personal details seem almost unnecessary. With two more releases since, and several references to Jai Paul floating around the web, I’d definitely keep an eye out for what’s to come from Blood Culture.
Sinkane – Hold Tight [DFA/City Slang]
Hold Tight differs significantly from Sinkane’s past releases, with its Sade-esque vocals and spaced-out, thumping bass taking it to a whole new degree of soul. This number will be included on the Sudanese singer’s forthcoming album Mean Love, to be released via DFA Records in North America and City Slang in the rest of the world.
Nile Rodgers – Do What You Wanna Do (Moon Boots Remix) [CR2]
LessThan3 premiered Chocolate Puma’s remix of Nile Rodgers’ Do What You Wanna Do a couple weeks ago, and now comes the deep and dynamic remix by none other than the French Express disco star Moon Boots. This tune came out on Cr2 Records on June 16, and it will be included as part of a hefty remix package coming out on August 10.
