Disclosure and friends started out their Bay Area blitz at Berkeley’s Greek Theater on Friday for Wild Life 2014, but the real party started later that evening at San Francisco’s The Independent, where Guy Lawrence was joined onstage by Kaytranada, Justin Martin, and producer Jimmy Napes for a phenomenal late-night DJ set.
Howard Lawrence, half of the British sibling duo, missed the set due to illness, but that didn’t stop older brother Guy from dishing out an incredibly energetic ninety minute set in the intimate venue. He opened in signature Disclosure style with When A Fire Starts To Burn, but from there the show took a dive off the deep house end as Guy mixed several of the duo’s hits with a string of pulsating garage tracks including Inspector Norse by Todd Terje, ’90s tune Gypsy Woman (She’s Homeless) by Crystal Waters and Dimitri From Paris’ remix of Thinking of You by Sister Sledge.
Though he performed solo, Guy certainly wasn’t lacking company onstage. Fellow Wild Life performers Kaytranada and Justin Martin ensured the crowd was having just as much fun as they were as they danced around the DJ booth and even poured vodka into the mouths of lucky fans. Jimmy Napes, co-writer of Latch, Together, and several other hits took a turn at the tables with Guy.
The show was an interesting divergence from the duo’s live performance, as it allowed Guy and his ensemble to showcase some of the house music, both modern and classic, that’s impacted their infectious sound. Look out for the boys on a tour stop near you.
