Jon Convex - Convexations (Original Mix) [3024]
Jon Convex - Falling Again (Original Mix) [3024]

Aside from a single FACT mix earlier this year, Convexations is the first we have heard from Jon Convex without partner in crime Boddika. Their work together as Instra:Mental has elevated the duo to the upper echelons of the drum’n’bass world, so naturally Jon’s first solo EP was always going to receive a lot of attention from the press. Fortunately, his bombastic funk is exactly what fans have been waiting for, giving another top-drawer release to Martyn’s increasingly crucial 3024 imprint.

Jon keeps things short and sweet: two in-your-face bangers without an unnecessary remix in sight. Convexations itself churns and broils with tortured, frothing vocals occasionally floating to the surface only to sink back again into the dark. Falling Again dials up the boogie, a crisp 2-step beat bathed in static from digitally distressed vocal samples while lush pads counter the staccato harshness. This first release is promising, with Convex’s more direct approach to composition ensuring that his solo work has an identity of its own and avoids being labeled as merely an Instra:Mental side project.
