Mat Zo is something rare in dance music in that it’s impossible to place him in a genre. Arbitrary tags are used by online retailers and offer little in the way of a description. As a result, his music does the talking, and it’s always a pleasant surprise.
Only For You, the latest single from his debut album Damage Control, has strong hints of French house about it, but don’t be fooled–it’s more Michael Cassette than Daft Punk. Featuring the vocals of Rachel Collier, it would also be fair to describe it as having a “pop” feel, but while Only For You could easily climb up the charts, it’s still something very unique–very Mat Zo. Backing things up are remixes from Croquet Club, complete with their signature piano riffs and chilled house rhythms, a massive big-room effort from Maor Levi, and a remix from Estiva which is almost a tribute to Zo’s previous work.
Placing Only For You in a genre may be impossible, but it’s nothing but a good thing, because if there’s one thing dance music needs, it’s people who are hard to label, and Mat Zo is one of them. Only For You is out now on Anjunabeats.
