We’ve got a new Joel Zimmerman track for you, but it isn’t a deadmau5 production. Nope, it’s a brand new techno alias he’s launched, appropriately named “testpilot.” If that didn’t have you salivating, get this–the tune is the first release on Richie Hawtin’s Plus 8 Records since late 2012.

The track, titled Sunspot (White Space Conflict), is a tantalizingly terrific techno tune. It’s dark, minimalistic, and a definite step away from Joel’s more melody-driven progressive house productions, but it still retains an impressive atmosphere and a sliver of that all-too-familiar soul.

Although there has been no formal press release, after a bit of detective work we’ve learned that, two years ago, deadmau5 uploaded a track called Sunspot to his SoundCloud before eventually pulling it down. In fact, you can still find copies floating around on YouTube. Still not convinced? Check out this exchange between Joel and one of his fans down below.

Label boss Richie Hawtin had this to say about the release:

“It’s been nearly two years since the last PLUS 8 record, but it seemed fitting that this record in particular, made by another skinny white kid from Canada, became part of the label’s collection and history.”

This isn’t the first time these two living legends have joined forces–Richie and Joel performed a techno-inspired b2b set at last year’s SXSW Closing Party, and they also spoke together at a SXSW session titled Talk. Techno. Technology.

Sunspot (White Space Conflict) is available now on Beatport, and it also comes equipped with a dark techno remix, courtesy of Pig & Dan.
