KOAN Sound dropped their latest EP last week on Skrillex’s OWSLA imprint, proving that bass music can be sophisticated and funky on top of being incredibly intense. Titled Funk Blaster, this five-track EP (four originals and a remix) is properly defined by any of its tracks; each and every tune is properly epic!
The title track (video below) takes a bit of rock influence as well as some old school gaming encouragement, and innovates them into something fresh, funky, and downright incredible. Next is The Edge, a track that ironically dances on the edge of any genre’s label. Less aggressive than the title track, this song is more about the jam than it is about raging out, and hits that “kick back” button oh so well. Lastly is Kill the Noise’s remix of Talk Box. The drum’n’bass vet spits out an unforgivingly putrid remix, feeding the listener some retarded talking basslines. Funk Blaster is a great release for the blooming OWSLA label. Sick tunes, up-and-coming artists, and a fresh sound are all elements that are going to solidify the label as a true force going into 2012.
