It’s a testament to Nicolas Jaar’s talent and ambition that while his debut album of utterly mesmeric house is being anointed “Album of the Year” in many quarters, Nicolas himself sees fit to drop the first release of his new project Darkside, a set of three untitled blues electronica tracks on which he collaborates with guitarist Dave Harrington. Moves like this make Jaar one of the most exciting artists in electronic music at the moment. At just 21 years of age, he has already released material more creative and of greater finesse than almost all of his contemporaries.
In contrast to the shamanic deep house sets that led to him being named Live Act of the Year by Resident Advisor only a few weeks ago, Darkside’s A1, A2 and A3 are driven primarily not by drums, but by Harrington’s rumbling guitar. Over this fretwork, Jaar arrays artful synths and multiple layers of his own stretched falsetto, creating atmospheres not dissimilar to those on Space Is Only Noise.
