I previously talked about Flying Lotus on our EZ indie electronica post. For those of you unfamiliar with FlyLo, he’s been leading the experimental game for the past year now, with the well-received album Cosmogramma, released on Warp Records. Cosmogramma takes you on a journey through the cosmos, stopping along the way to enjoy the view with majestic tracks such as Zodiac S**t and the hip Do The Astral Plane. FlyLo expresses his musical ability to the fullest on this album to create pure headphone bliss. But be warned, this is not music for the casual listener. This EDM doesn’t feature any drops or minimal progression–it’s musical expression and experimentation at its finest. Although you may at first be tempted to classify it as “noise”, give it a couple of chances. I find it particularly enjoyable to go outside my comfort zone when it comes to music, and often it has paid off.
The music video for MmmHmm was released not too long ago. To say it’s “interesting” is an understatement. It’s a trippy cocktail consisting of one part asteroids, one part Native American spiritual journey, and many parts of WTF. Soaring though the heavens, Flying Lotus and Thundercat have a magical connection via 8-bit video games and Tron. If that sounds awesome, it’s because it is. Although the message of this video is beyond my reach, I can appreciate the director’s creativity – it’s unlike anything I’ve seen in an EDM video. So, whether you’re down for the cause or not, give this album a try. I have a feeling you’ll be glad you checked it out.
