When we interviewed Guy Gerber late last year, he told us that we should keep a close eye on his protege, Clarian North: “…he’s a great young producer, reminds me a lot of me. I’ve let him stay in my studio and produce while I’m away–he’s like my brother.” We took notice as well, naming Clarian’s dream-pop group Footprintz one of our top up-and-coming acts of 2013. With a full-length Footprintz album set to release next month, the young producer is ready to make a big splash, and the new Chemical Gardens EP showcases the breadth of his musical talent.
The standout on this release is the first track, a collaboration between Clarian and Guy that was recently named Pete Tong’s Essential New Tune. Claire burns bright, made to see the sun rise and set with tangling synths and triumphant keys; the track is more than deserving of its essential status. Clarian proves he’s no slouch on his own either with similarly idyllic tracks Destroy She Says and Renaissance.
The second half of Chemical Gardens sees a darker turn from the Montreal native. Remove Control and U (Unfinished) drive deep, peak-time stompers for sweat-drenched clubs, while acid oozes from the bounce of Through Your Mind. Clarian takes us on a killer ride through this EP, fittingly released on Visionquest. Pick up Chemical Gardens on vinyl through Juno.
