Yours Truly and adidas originals recently invited Aussie R&B crooner Chet Faker and Virginia rhymespitter GoldLink to meet in the studio and create a new collaborative track as part of the ongoing Songs From Scratch series.
The end result is On You, a soulful hip hop/R&B blend that recalls late-’90s groups like Blackstreet in their prime–fitting, considering Faker first caught the attention of electronic fans with a cover of that group’s smash hit No Diggity. The guys bonded in the studio over a story Chet recounted about meeting a girl in Vancouver who made him want to drop everything for her, and this became the main lyrical conceit that they built the song around. Faker’s mellow keyboard tones and falsetto hook meld surprisingly well with GoldLink’s nimble flow, adding up to one smooth throwback number that could’ve only arisen in the twenty-first century.
