Ever since Paul Oakenfold assumed guest mix duties for its inaugural episode twenty years ago, the Essential Mix has been a staple in dance music. From Skrillex to Guti and everyone in between, Pete Tong’s highly revered mix has served as a platform for artists to showcase their signature sound to new and old fans alike. How did Pete Tong and co. celebrate 20 years of essential tunes? By throwing a massive party on Nov. 16 that saw some of the biggest names in deep and tech hit the stage at Manchester’s Warehouse Project.
The second part of BBC Radio 1’s celebration of essential tunes continued on Friday night with a recording of two unforgettable sets from the Essential Mix @ 20 Party at Manchester’s Warehouse Project. German house duo Booka Shade manned the decks for a live set of their own productions while ViVA Music head honcho Steve Lawler went back to back with Hot Since 82 for an hour. Lawler and Hot Since 82’s set included Marco Farone and Arado’s 2010 tech house groove, Strange Neighbors, the White Isle’s 2013 summer anthem, Finder by Ninetoes, and one of my personal favorite Hot Since 82 tracks, Like You. The mix concludes on an uplifting note with Kölsch’s Goldfish, making this an Essential Mix you cannot miss.
