Magnus August Høiberg is a 24-year-old from Oslo, Norway who loves cats. He also happens to be an incredibly talented producer going by the name of Cashmere Cat. In only a few months, Cashmere Cat has become one of the leading names behind the fusion of electronic music and hip hop. Part of the reason that Cashmere Cat is such a great producer is his ability to mix playfulness with superior technicality, and as a former finalist in the 2011 DMC World DJ Championships, technicality is certainly not lost on the young Norwegian.
His newest release is Aurora, part of the Feathers EP compilation on his own label, Pelican Fly. It’s a little more minimalistic than his previous work and carries an ominous and forboding tone. The track starts out with a lone beat before layering in gongs and a bumping drum line. It’s a nice change of pace and serves as a stark contrast to his most famous track, Mirror Maru. If you haven’t heard the Cat’s breakout 2012 hit yet, now is as good a time as any.
Mirror Maru just oozes sensuality as a sexy piano and harp join forces to create something angelic. It’s soft, silky, and most definitely groovy–think trap music influenced by R&B rather than hiphop. It still has the same tempo as trap, only the music is much more laid back and not quite so “in your face”. Check out the Cat’s Soundcloud page for more tracks and download links. Rawwwwr.
