When lists of the greatest dance tracks of all time are compiled, Café Del Mar is almost always near the top, so when you bring a name like Paul Oakenfold into the fray, you know you’re in for something special.
The collision of a legendary producer and a legendary track is part of Oakenfold’s upcoming Trance Mission album–a “covers” LP featuring some of the all time EDM classics, each with a new twist. Energy 52’s Café Del Mar is the latest chapter in the story, with several remixes to back it up. Paul’s rework is true to the original, but it takes things in a very “Fluoro” direction with a tough psy-trance style, something followers of the label will be well accustomed to. It’s a theme that runs throughout the package to varying degrees–Activa takes the more dreamy and uplifting end of the scale, Angry Man goes very tough and techy with plenty of acid lines, and Peetu S gives us an old school hard house feel. Yet all four tracks feature that defining Fluoro style–a taste of the old-school with a new and exciting twist.
Cafe Del Mar is out March 10, with the full Trance Mission album due this spring.
