The title track from Burial’s last EP, Rival Dealer, is one of the most cinematic tracks this UK garage producer has ever made. Clocking in at just over 10 minutes, it feels like a veritable garage opera, with distinct sections and voiceovers to fill the role of the characters. There’s an atmospheric prologue, an action-packed beginning, a conversational interlude followed by a menacing ending, and finally a beautiful epilogue that soars into the heavens with the imagined end credits.
Filmmaker Ben Dawkins picked up on the song’s tone, and has created a short film inspired by it. Though not an official music video, the film was nonetheless approved by both Burial and Hyperdub, and it’s easy to see why. The story follows a drug dealer through a particularly stressful night. It sounds straightforward enough, but just when you think you know where the film is going, something shocking happens. Watch below:
