Described by his own label as “the musical equivalent of putting seven glowsticks in a blender,” OWSLA newcomer Nick Thayer takes today’s best sounds and liquifies them into a symphony of hurt. Channeling the powers of Dillon Francis, Knife Party, and of course Skrillex, the classically trained, former grunge-funk-rocker from Melbourne brings some serious heaviness to the OWSLA game with his Like Boom EP.
“I don’t care about genres. Good music is good music,” he says in the official release. And is it ever so good. His own remix of the title track gives us some Tupac-like stylings at the beginning, but then drops into the moombahcore action we’ve come to love so much recently. Totalitaria is an instrumental rendition of Thayer’s prodigious moombah, produced with an airtight sparkle that gives Mr. Francis a serious run for his money. What Props Ya Got reminds me, if anything, of Skrillex’s Twin Atlantic remix that shredded 2011 into small pieces. Frantic and frenzied drum’n’bass that’d drive the most jaded bassheads insane with detail is what’s going on here. Thayer obviously shows little regard for genres or tempos, or even accepted notions of what club music should be. It just “promises to rip sound systems apart.”
