In filtering the vocal and adding a crunchy guitar-led groove and fantastical synthesizer work to Rihanna’s 2007 sensational hit single Umbrella, production tandem Blu J has breathed new life into a venerated pop classic.
This track is best imagined as fitting in a funk-driven set from the likes of GRiZ, as compared to being heard next to trap remixes of Rihanna’s 2015 hit BBHMM. The production’s laid-back vibe removes all elements of “torch song” that made the original so legendary, but also makes one believe that the remixed version is almost a brand-new song unto itself. A showcase of Blu J’s production skills ideally aimed at making the Vancouver and San Francisco-based pair break out, it should succeed at its aim.
