Birdy Nam Nam has just released their 11-track LP on OWSLA entitled Defiant Order, a futuristic and often dark record that experiments with a broad range of sounds. Unlike a lot of high-profile releases today, Defiant Order seems as if it was made more for a straight listen-through rather than a show or festival. That being said, just about every one of these tracks could easily find its way into a live set, although listening to each track back to back in their entirety has a certain flow and story that they seem to want to tell.
The clear favorite track of mine is Written In the Sand, which begins with spacey synths that lead into a nice drum accompaniment almost 45 seconds into the track. It’s one of the more relaxed tracks throughout the release that could easily be mixed into a late-night/early-morning set and one that doesn’t seem as dark as most of the others. Another standout track is Cadillac Dreams, which taps into the low, bass-heavy vocals similar to that of Goin’ In followed by eerie synths throughout the track.
Defiant Order is a prime example of how Birdy Nam Nam and OWSLA are attempting to expand the musical tastes of current and new electronic music enthusiasts with a release that that is great to listen to all the way through and sure to find its way into the sets of many live shows.
Defiant Order can now be purchased on Beatport here.
