Pangaea seems to operate in a relaxed manner. His music may be crisp, tight, and jacked, but his pace of production is distinctly sedentary. While not generally a recommended tactic in an industry where individual releases are becoming steadily less profitable, this particular producer uses the scarcity of his material to his advantage, playing on the old “absence makes the heart grow fonder” adage. As well as being his first release on Untold’s unbelievably good Hemlock imprint, Hex/Fatalist is also coming off the back of a groundbreaking pair of EPs for Hessle Audio, resulting in this being one of the most hotly anticipated bass releases of the last few months.
Anyone who has heard a Pangaea track before knows the drill. The music on offer here is full of mechanically precise jungle-inflected 2-step strewn with taut, booming subs and weirdly spliced alien vocals, all produced to a ridiculously high standard. It really is pretty tremendous stuff, and those who enjoy it should do themselves a favour and check out the rest of Hemlock’s catalogue. As well as Untold himself, the label has released stellar material by James Blake, Fantastic Mr Fox, Cosmin TRG, and Ramadanman, all of which deserve your attention.
