Production trio Autograf deftly blends classic vibes with futuristic house elements for Proud, an impressive modern reboot of The Temptations’ 1966 Motown hit Ain’t Too Proud To Beg.
What’s more impressive than anything about this is the use of the sweeping and banging bassline from Van Halen’s 1978 hit Jamie’s Crying as the sample that underpins the whole production. Those of you born after 1978 probably know this bassline best as the one that also anchors Tone Loc’s 1990 rap hit Wild Thing. However, it’s that bassline mixing with the interplay between The Temptations’ vocals fading in and out of a mix of xylophone synths and chopping breaks that ultimately gives the production its modern dancefloor appeal.
