These days, Armand Van Helden (pictured) is perhaps best known as one-half of Duck Sauce alongside his buddy A-Trak. But Van Helden is an accomplished DJ and producer in his own right who’s been busy puttin’ in work ever since he came up in Boston in the ’90s. His latest effort is a collaborative joint with Joshua “Hervé” Harvey for Ministry Of Sound entitled Power Of Bass.
This retro-leaning, disco-house heater lifts its diva vocals from the 1987 classic Bass Power by Raze and Doug Lazy. But where that tune leaned more toward the hip hop side of “hip house,” Power Of Bass sounds like it was recently unearthed from a time capsule buried beneath a rundown rollerskating rink sometime in the early ’90s. And we mean that in the best way possible–Power Of Bass undoubtedly would’ve been a smash hit during that era, but in today’s climate of cookie-cutter drops it actually sounds quite fresh and unique.
There’s no word of an official release date for Power Of Bass, but let’s hope that this single signals more on the horizon from Hervé and Van Helden.
