When it comes to all time trance classics, Southern Sun is certainly up there. Written by Paul Oakenfold, remixed by Tiesto, and featuring stunning and haunting vocals courtesy of Carla Werner, it is often cited as “the song which go me into trance” by many a fan. So as trance continues to experience a renaissance, we’re treated to one of the best remix packages of the year so far.
Out on Oakenfold’s Perfecto Fluoro, this is yet another example of the label showing what trance is capable of. Thomas Datt’s remix is solid and driving, nothing too overstated, leaving all the attention on the build, which takes special attention in bringing out what the track is about. Extended vocals with some lush pads, it’s a reminder that Southern Sun is an excellent piece of songwriting, with quite a deep story behind it. Taking things up a notch is Angry Man, with a massive dose of psy-trance and some lovely chords in the breaks which give the vocal a whole new feel. Finnish producer Orkidea provides a classic piece of uplifting euphoria, with a hint of the 90’s heyday in the form of some old school acid-lines and synth-stabs. Rounding things off is Paul Webster, with a darker and more pounding remix which has already been around for a few years on various compilations and finally sees a full release.
It’s all too easy to commission a few half-baked remixes of a “classic”, but this is anything but. Each of the guys featuring on this release have clearly taken the time to bring out the best of what Southern Sun has to offer and add their own twist to it. Grab these remixes now on Beatport and play them to your friends, it might just get them into trance too.
