It’s a busy time for Hardwell, but then again, you’d expect nothing else from the world’s recently crowned #1 DJ. The Dutch master is taking his I Am Hardwell show around the world at the moment and recently took some time a little closer to home, with several massive gigs across the UK.
We caught up with him at one of two Manchester shows at the Victoria Warehouse. In common with every other UK date, both nights were sold out, and the crowd combined with the history of both the venue and the city for a very special atmosphere.
From the early days of The Hacienda to the legendary Warehouse Project, there’s something about Manchester’s post-industrial landscape which makes it ideal for live music, a factor Hardwell was keen to make use of.
“The I Am Hardwell show is very much a pop-up nightlife project which we built to fit various spaces from concert halls to football stadiums. Taking the show to this disused Manchester warehouse which has this really urban and industrial feel to it was something very unique. We really pushed the levels with the production, and I spent a long time over the Christmas period working on a special set for the show, so I felt really confident going into the weekend’s gigs that this was going to be a very magical experience for everyone there,” Hardwell said.
Supported by fellow countryman and protégé Dannic, it was clear that both were proud to write their own entry into the city’s impressive musical history.
“I was chatting with Dannic, who also played across both nights, about how crazy the crowds are in Manchester. It was so welcoming to see people from all over the UK as well as other parts of Europe there for this party and loving it as much as we did. Manchester is renowned for being this great city for dance music, so I was just really pleased to put my own dent on the city’s legendary reputation.”
As the UK leg of the tour comes to a close, it’s very clear that Hardwell has earned his place at the top of the tree when it comes to performing live. The dedication of his fans is amazing to see, and his love for playing to them gives the live shows an amazing atmosphere which isn’t just about lights and pyros. With the I Am Hardwell tour now jetting off to South America followed by Australia and the US, there’s plenty of chance to experience firsthand exactly why Hardwell is fully deserving of the #1 spot.
