“How that truth sounds is naturally your choice.” These were Emika’s words in reference to her remix contest where contestants were instructed to use stems provided on SoundCloud from her track 3 Hours and turn them into a masterpiece of bass music. Ninja Tune has such an eclectic spread of artists that it’s hard to put a pin on how any new offering will sound; thus, when I got wind of the release, I grabbed a copy.
The 3 Hours EP is a poppy take on bass music. It’s fun, vocal, almost loungey at times, but the bass is heavy and the beat driving. The title track’s original mix would seem the most prudent introduction to the artist–I feel like it truly captures Emika’s flair. Included on the EP as well are the more chilled out Hit Me, compiled from the same stems, and the techy Kilon Tek remix of 3 Hours. I enjoy its persistently dark, dynamic vibe. This is just one of the examples of how you can never know where EDM is going; it’s always changing and being used in new ways.
