Who said trap is all about guns and grillz? I’ve always been a fan of the softer, more progressive side of trap, and after hearing Hansel Thorn’s Standing on our first edition of Trap Tuesdays I just had to find some more mellow beats. SMOG Records label head and all around bass ambassador 12th Planet (pictured) has teamed up with ATL producer Mayhem to release Whoops, and it doesn’t get much prettier than this.
Whoops begins with melodic synths and tension-building drums before the vocals echo in, and man are the vocals gorgeous. Singer/songwriter Pennybirdrabbit conveys a sense of longing and serves as the perfect complement to 12th Planet and Mayhem’s beautiful production. The drop is both emotional and sentimental–two things you don’t expect to hear in a trap song, and even more surprising coming from this pair of bassheads. The B-Side is titled Murdaaa, which is fairly standard trap fare but a legit dancefloor banger in its own right. Grab the pair now on Beatport or iTunes.
