What a year it has been for Skrillex, having won MTV’s award for top EDM artist of 2011 and also becoming nominated for not one but five grammies including best new artist! Personally I’m eager to see him win some grammys–it would certainly be an admittance of the EDM community taking over the music scene these past few years. The former emo rocker Sonny Moore is also stepping up his game on tour, booking even bigger and better venues with several shows in the new year at venues like New York City’s Roseland Ballroom and Hollywood’s Palladium.
It ain’t easy to tour all over and still create wicked beats but Skrillex has somehow pulled it off again with his new Bangarang EP, out now on Big Beat. Just in time for Christmas, the surprise release begins with Right In, a hard dubstep track that delivers his delicious trademark basslines and uplifting melodies. It continues with a banging collaboration called The Devil’s Den with Texas producer Wolfgang Gartner. This one is surely to become a major hit with just how hard it drops and how satisfying the breakdown explodes into dubstep. Continuing, while some critics say Skrillex is out of ideas, it’s clear by this EP that he’s always interested in expanding into new realms and isn’t held back by genre lines. Just take a listen to the aggressive tech trance-influenced tune Right On Time produced with fellow OWSLA artists 12th Planet and Kill The Noise. Its vivid, dark techy influences are similar to tunes like Forbidden City by Marc Simz and Turbulence by Klauss Goulart, and the result is mindblowing.
Sonny has also released a brand new viral music video for his track Ruffneck (FULL Flex) showing kids screaming at poor Santa Claus who definitely could be having a better Christmas. Check it out below!
